Sutton: Catherine’s food and beverage products

Sauvages et Cultivées is a Sutton-based company founded and managed by Catherine Lalonde, a traditional herbalist. The company manufactures various food products based on plants at the border between food and medicine: tonics (based on plant extracts in vinegar), lacto-fermentations, syrups, etc. It also produces dried plants.

Catherine Lalonde is a graduate of the Herbothèque and has been a teacher in this training establishment since 2008. She is also the coordinator and editor of the Magazine Plantes Médicinales, published by the Guilde des herboristes.

The Fire Tonic is a concentrate made of cider vinegar 4.5%, ginger, cayenne and honey that can be used in many ways:

  • drink it alone in a shot
  • dilute it with water, sparkling water, in herbal tea, (gives the impression of a spicy lemonade), in juice
  • use it in cocktails and mocktails
  • use it in various recipes for marinades, vinaigrettes, jams, etc.

As it is primarily a food, it cannot be claimed that Fire Tonic cures any particular ailment. However, ginger is known to be used traditionally in herbal medicine to help relieve digestive discomforts, including loss of appetite, nausea, digestive spasms, indigestion, dyspepsia and flatulent colic (carminative) as well as an expectorant and cough suppressant to help relieve bronchitis, coughs and colds

Cider vinegar and honey have also been part of popular medicine for ages and are recognized throughout the world for their tonic, antiseptic and nutritive qualities.
