8 surprising and little-known health truths.

As Mr. Georges Mouton, gastroenterologist , says so well: ” Health is not conceived otherwise than through a perfectly healthy intestine! “

  1. Did you know that the human body is made up of 130 trillion microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, viruses, parasites, etc.), which represents 90 % of our total body constitution compared to the 100 000 billion human cells, which represents only 10 %? This means that we are essentially microbes!
  2. Did you know that your intestine is the largest organ in the human body and the most extensive sensory organ with 100 million neurons and 7 m in length?
  3. Did you know that the microbiota (microbial flora) is made up of more than 500 species of bacteria from 90 different genera and that it weighs about 2 kg?
  4. -Did you know that one gram of excrement contains more bacteria than humans on Earth?
  5. Did you know that the small intestine is where 95 % of your serotonin, the neurotransmitter ” antidepressant ” is produced? The intestine is also the site of synthesis of more than 20 hormones!
  6. Did you know that 70 % of our immune system is stored in the gut?
  7. Did you know that the digestive process consumes 70 % of our daily energy
  8. -The medicine of tomorrow

It’s high time people realized that illness (and health!) doesn’t fall from the sky on us for no reason and without us being partly responsible! The disease develops in a body that is not adapted to its environment and this has been proven for more than a decade! I am referring here to epigenetics. This branch of biology studies the effects of individual behavior and the environment on the expression (activation, repression) of the genes we carry. It is now scientifically proven that diet, stress level, age, quality of environment, intake of certain medications and quality of social relationships (to name but a few factors) cause significant changes in genetic activity, which directly influences our propensity to develop, or not, diseases. These discoveries are extraordinary because they allow us to better understand the context in which the disease develops and is inscribed. It is therefore asserted that lifestyle habits take precedence over genetic expression (genetic diseases represent only 5   of diseases) in ensuring, or not, health.

Epigenetics is intimately linked to the naturopathic approach! In the United States, we are witnessing a new medical wave Integrative medicine, where modern medical expertise, naturopathic approach, acupuncture, osteopathy and various stress management techniques are combined and where professionals from these disciplines pool their skills (and bury their respective professional egos!) to offer more comprehensive care. Harvard University in Massachusetts is one of the pillars and promoters of this new paradigm. This is the medicine of the future! A medicine where the patient is a participant and where professionals recognize the skills and relevance of different traditional and modern approaches.

P.-S. : Naturopathy is beneficial, regardless of your health condition. Digestive and sleep disorders, joint pain, fibromyalgia, allergies, autism, attention deficit disorder, nervous exhaustion, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, cancer, autoimmune diseases and many other conditions can be significantly improved by changing certain harmful lifestyle habits. In other cases, it will facilitate weight management and stress management, help relieve menopausal symptoms, and be a precious ally in perinatal care and pediatrics.
