The cherry
The Latin name of the camerise is Lonicera Caerulea. This northern shrub has several other designations: Edible Honeysuckle, Blue Honeysuckle, Honeyberry, Sweet Berry Honeysuckle. On the English side the name chosen is Haskap Berry, an ancient Japanese name meaning “berry of long life and good vision.
This name was chosen in Quebec in June 2006. The word cherry was more appropriate phonetically than Haskap to designate a fruit that we wanted to promote in Quebec.This fruit has some very interesting characteristics: antioxidants and vitamins.

Its shape is similar to that of a large blueberry that has been lightly pressed by rolling it between the fingers. Its peel melts in the mouth. But unlike blueberries, the inside is wine red without seeds and its taste is sweet, sour and bitter depending on the variety. Some compare it to a blend of blueberry, raspberry and blackberry with a hint of bitterness. Honestly, it’s hard to make a taste link with another fruit, its taste is unique.
In Quebec, the first commercial plantings took place in 2007 with approximately 2000 plants planted. In 2013, it is estimated that this number reached nearly 500,000 plants, one-third of which are in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.
